🚔 Update on Speeding & Anti-Social Vehicle Use in Tiverton 🚔

We know that speeding and anti-social driving continue to be concerns for many residents across Tiverton, and we wanted to provide an update on the work that is taking place to address these issues.

Whilst not all of this work is visible to the public, please be assured that there is a significant amount of work taking place behind the scenes. Activities such as intelligence gathering, gathering evidence, analysing data, reviewing CCTV, liaising with partner agencies and coordinating enforcement operations are all vital parts of tackling these issues and can be just as valuable and productive as officers being physically out on patrol.

✅ Speed Monitoring

Our Roads Policing Team recently deployed Speed Data Recorders (SDRs) on Lea Road for a seven-day period, collecting data 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, the results did not meet the threshold required to justify enforcement activity at this location. However, this is something that can be reviewed and requested again in the future should concerns continue.

✅ Targeting Anti-Social Driving

We have been working closely with our Roads Policing Team regarding reports of anti-social vehicle use. This has included requests for information about specific locations, days and times where incidents are occurring so that resources can be directed to the areas of greatest concern. Once this information has been collated, dedicated tasking days will be arranged to target anti-social driving hotspots.

✅ Speed Detection Activity

We have requested that the Speed Detection Team conduct enforcement where possible in areas highlighted for speeding concerns. However, they can sometimes be restricted by the locations available, as enforcement sites must provide safe hard-standing ground and be clearly visible to motorists.

✅ Vehicle Meets and CCTV Enquiries

We are currently liaising with Tesco regarding any CCTV footage that may assist in identifying vehicles involved in reported vehicle meets and gatherings.

✅ Vehicle Seizures

Over the past few weeks, a small number of vehicles have been seized for having no valid vehicle tax, and we will continue to monitor this. For a vehicle to be seized under these powers, it must have been recorded as untaxed for more than 61 days.

✅ Recent Positive Action

Recently we have:

• Issued two Anti-Social Behaviour Warning Letters and provided strong words of advice to two motorbike riders.
• Issued a Community Protection Warning (CPW) to an individual for anti-social driving.

✅ Section 59 Powers

To take action under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, we require evidence of anti-social vehicle use, such as CCTV, dashcam footage or other supporting evidence. Where the criteria are met, this can ultimately result in the seizure of the vehicle involved.

ℹ️ What the Police Can and Can't Do

We are often asked about speed cameras, speed bumps, vehicle-activated warning signs and additional road signage. These measures fall under the responsibility of Devon County Council and the Highways Authority, rather than the police. Whilst we work closely with our partners and can raise concerns where appropriate, decisions regarding the installation of traffic-calming measures and road infrastructure sit with those agencies.

📹 Report Anti-Social Driving Through Operation Snap

If you have dashcam, helmet cam, CCTV or mobile phone footage of anti-social or dangerous driving, you can submit it directly through Operation Snap. The footage is reviewed and can lead to enforcement action where offences are identified.

The more detailed information we receive, the better we can work with our Roads Policing Team and Speed Detection Team to target the most affected areas and make the best use of available resources.
